Introduction
Lighthouses have held an intense fascination for me from both a physical and metaphorical perspective. Historically, the lights have marked dangerous coastlines, hazardous shoals, reefs, safe entries to harbors, and have also assisted in aerial navigation. Metaphorically, they symbolize the guidance given in difficult times. Once widely used, the number of operational lighthouses has declined due to the expense of maintenance and replacement by modern electronic navigational systems.
This website provides a glimpse of six of the 123 lighthouses in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and is meant to be a starting point for your continued investigation into these often-forgotten historical landmarks. Next time you travel to the region, be sure to include these lighthouses on your itinerary.
Visit often to see updates to these pages including lighthouses from the southern shores of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario to be added in mid-August. Enjoy your visit!
